It has been a historic week. President Obama signed the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act on Tuesday, April 21, 2009. The Act significantly expands national service opportunities for Americans of all ages and it is a true testament to service being nonpartisan (props to those Iowa Representatives voting for it, including both Senator Grassley and Senator Harkin and Rep. Loebsack for introducing the House version of the bill). The Act also helps nonprofits build capacity to better work with volunteers to create innovations in the way nonprofits train, manage and recruit volunters.
Outside of just looking forward, national service programs are having an impact right now by implementing Recovery Act funds to help jumpstart our economy. Learn more about this here.
As Martin Luther King, Jr. once said "Everybody can be great, because everybody can serve."
